Acne Winter Skincare Tips

Unlike the summer, when you get breakouts in the winter – cold, dry air is most likely to blame. The products that you use during the summer won’t work as well in the winter to fight breakouts, leaving your skin dry and malnourished. Then comes the deadly cycle of dryness and irritation, especially if you are acne prone. Irritation can be especially dangerous if your skin begins to crack because areas like these can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria – which we want to avoid.

Why does this happen?

There are various ways that winter acne can appear. In many cases, the combination of cold weather and strong indoor heat is the cause for our skin becoming drier. Also, using cleansers high in benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid will dry out your pimples, but will leave your skin producing more oil to compensate for the sudden loss of moisture. Oil clogs pores and worsens breakouts, so it is most important to use a good moisturizer come winter to keep your face from drying out.

Three Simple Ways To Treat It

  • Use A Gentle Cleanser: Try using a more gentle cleanser that won’t strip skin of its natural moisture. Though harsher cleansers are good for the summertime, they dry out and irritate your skin further in the winter! Changing your facial cleanser not only helps clear up existing acne, but also significantly prevents acne from forming.
  • Nourish Your Skin: There are many different ways out there to keep your skin healthy and nourished. Some include Vitamin D masks, facial treatments, moisturizing masks, or flaxseed oil, but are all used for one purpose – to keep our skin glowing and radiant! One that we recommend is a fruit pack. You can find these in stores, or make your own at home. Doing this once a week can dramatically clear up your acne and help maintain healthy skin.
    • To make a fruit pack:  Use fruits like papayas, strawberries, mango, or grapes. Mix them in a blender with yogurt until it reaches a smooth-like consistency, and then apply it on your face and keep it on for at least 20 minutes, before rinsing it off with water
  • Switch Up Your Pillow Cases: This may come off as a surprise, but its been found that oil from your hair and skin get absorbed into your pillowcases over time and create a build up of oil, which rubs against your face when you sleep. Especially if you’re acne prone – this can lead to an increase in breakouts. Changing your pillowcases to keep them clean and fresh will reduce the likelihood of outbreaks as well as help clear up existing ones faster!
