Trend vs Truth: Jade Rolling

It seems like there’s a new skincare trend almost every day, and it can be hard to figure out which trends you should buy into, and which you should skip. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. One trend that’s taking the skincare world by storm is jade rolling--rolling a smooth jade stone over your skin using a chic roller.  But what does it really do? Here’s a deep look at the trend, its claims, and whether it really works.

Jade rolling supports lymphatic drainage by massaging the skin and stimulating circulation.

our take:

Most types of facial massage can help bring blood to the surface of your skin and aid in lymphatic drainage. Many people think that lymphatic drainage requires firm pressure, but actually a very light touch can do the job. By helping flush out excess fluid and bring fresh blood to the surface of the skin, the gentle facial massage provided by a jade roller really can help make your face look brighter and less puffy. But, if we’re being totally honest, the same could be said of a light DIY facial massage.

the claim:

Jade rolling can help cool and calm redness.

our take:

Jade does have a cooling feeling when you first apply it to the skin, but this sensation dissipates quickly as the stone warms from your natural body heat. The key to getting rid of redness lies in getting the skin cool enough to diminish inflammation.  If you’re hoping to really soothe redness and irritation, you’re probably better off reaching for an Ice Roller, which will get colder and stay colder for a much longer period.

the claim:

It can help minimize fine lines and promote collagen production.

our take:

Sorry, but probably not. In order to soften lines and promote collagen production in your skin, you need to stimulate your skin’s natural healing response. Because a jade roller simply massages the surface of your skin and doesn’t actually exfoliate or contain active ingredients that penetrate, it’s fairly unlikely that it can have any meaningful effect on your collagen production or wrinkles. You’re better off using a microneedling tool like our Microneedling Tool 2.0 or a potent serum like our EGF Activating Serum, which contains growth factors that kickstart your skin’s renewal response.

final word:

Whether or not you believe all the hype, jade rolling does feel very relaxing. If you enjoy the gentle massage it offers, we say go for it! Anything that makes your skincare regimen more enjoyable is worth it. Just don’t expect major anti-aging results.
