Is Your Makeup Hurting Your Skin?

Did you know the cosmetics industry is unregulated and that your makeup can contain harmful chemicals, toxins and even carcinogenic ingredients? It sounds shocking but it’s true. I always advise my clients to use brands that are dedicated to making their formulations as safe and natural as possible. It can be overwhelming trying to find brands that are truly safe and toxin free so it’s best to start with small steps such as learning a few key ingredients at a time to stay away from. To make this process super simple here are a few things I suggest you start eliminating from your cosmetics and personal care products. Your skin and body will thank you for it!

This ingredient can be highly toxic, and the term “fragrance” is sometimes used in place of the term “phthalate” which are chemicals known to cause developmental defects and delays, and can even harm reproductive health. Use brands that contain naturally based fragrances instead such as essential oil blends.

Lead is still being used in some lipstick brands despite the multitude of health risks.

Often used to add a glossy look to products, toluelene is actually a toxic chemical that can decrease a person’s fertility and is also linked to liver and kidney damage.

Many places in the world - like the European Union - have already banned toxins like formaldehyde from cosmetics. In the US it is still allowed. This ingredient can be highly irritating to the skin and immune system.

Talc is harder to avoid in cosmetics because it’s used so often. It is also a carcinogen, it can actually clog pores and has even been directly linked to ovarian cancer.
