Couperous: How To Get Rid of Broken Capillaries On Your Face
What is Couperous?

Couperous is a fancy term that describes broken capillaries, the tiny veins located just under the surface of your skin. These veins are small but numerous, which can become more visible with age. Broken capillaries are a real beauty concern because they can’t repair themselves. They consist of spider-like, twisting veins that are deep red to purple in color.

What Causes Broken Capillaries?

These tiny veins are ultra-sensitive to skin changes. In response to damage, capillaries dilate and break apart. While the veins themselves are still there, they are more pronounced and will not go back to their original places.

Broken capillaries are most commonly associated with age. As if wrinkles weren’t enough to worry about, the same causes of skin aging can be attributed to couperous. Collagen, the natural skin elasticity everyone craves, is lost with age. Thinning skin makes wrinkles and age spots more noticeable—as well as capillaries.

Since the capillaries are closer to the skin’s natural surface, they are more prone to breakage. This means that couperous isn’t solely affiliated with aging. All it may take is scrubbing the skin too harshly to break these sensitive veins. Also, if you thought that sun damage and cancer were the only reasons to limit UV exposure, you can think again—excessive sun exposure is a leading cause of broken capillaries. Injuries can also break capillaries.

If you have broken capillaries, you may even have your parents to thank for them. While age and injury can lead to couperous, these unsightly veins are also genetic. So, if your relatives have broken capillaries, you’re at a greater risk for developing them at some point in the future. It may be time to take preventive measures to thwart these unsightly veins!

Best Treatment Methods

Broken capillaries don’t repair themselves, but this doesn’t mean that help doesn’t exist! Laser therapy can help reduce broken capillaries, in much the same way that this procedure gets rid of scars. Cosmetic surgery can help by removing excess skin cells surrounding the broken capillaries.

Anti-aging spa treatments are also effective in reducing the appearance of couperous. One such treatment is micro needling, which works by gently puncturing the upper epidermis. A dermal roller equipped with small needles is applied to the skin to form tiny funnels to stimulate the wound-healing process, generating collagen, new cell growth and a denser epidermal layer.

One of the main benefits to micro needling is it increases collagen production, a natural elastic that gives skin its supple and young appearance. The result is thicker, more plump skin, which makes capillaries significantly less visible.

How You Can Help Broken Capillaries

Self-care tips can go a long way in terms of complementing couperous treatment. If you’re new to a beauty regimen, now is the time to start! Wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day, and immediately follow with an SPF moisturizer suited for your skin type. Exfoliating regularly at the spa can also decrease moisture imbalances that may lead to more pronounced capillaries.

You know that drinking water is good for your skin. When you have broken capillaries, however, it’s even more crucial to keep the skin hydrated. Avoid caffeine and instead drink spring water throughout the day. Also avoid alcohol, which is a culprit in vein dilation.
