Save Vs Splurge: Maximize Your Skincare Budget

Is that fancy cream really doing anything to my skin? I get questions like this all the time from my clients. Most of us don’t have a bottomless skincare budget and want to make sure we’re investing in products that really make a difference. Luckily, there are so many easy ways to save when it comes to skincare. The key is understanding your skin type, skin needs, and what products really make the biggest overall differenceto your complexion. Not sure where to save and where to splurge? Read on for my recommendations!

SAVE: Cleansers

The truth about cleansers is that almost all the product goes down the drain. Plus, there are so many effective and affordable cleansers in your local drugstore that you don’t need to spend a lot for something that gets the job done. Look for products suited to your skin type. Oily and acne-prone types should try a cleanser with beta-hydroxy acids like salicylic to exfoliate and prevent blemishes. Dry and sensitive types should reach for a mild, creamy cleanser like Cetaphil that effectively removes makeup and dirt without stripping skin.

SPLURGE: Treatments & Tools

As an esthetician I’m probably biased, but in-office facial treatments have the power to truly change your skin. Seek out a professional you love and trust for things like oxygen facials, dermaplaning treatments, and chemical peels to keep your skin glowing. Your esthetician may also recommend at-home tools like a microroller to maintain results in between treatments.Tools like rollers and anti-acne high frequency devices are worth splurging on to ensure you are using a product that is safe and effective.

SAVE: Moisturizers

Most moisturizers contain occlusive ingredients that act as an invisible barrier on the surface of the skin. These ingredients help your skin maintain its moisture levels but they don’t actually absorb into your skin; even if the moisturizer includes fancy anti-aging ingredients, it won’t provide deep down changes. Instead of shelling out for a pricey lotion, look for a basic moisturizer suited to your skin type.

SPLURGE: Serums

Unlike moisturizers which sit on the surface of skin, serums are designed to sink into the skin and treat it with high concentrations of active ingredients. This is where you’ll see the most bang for your buck. Pricier products in this category generally contain more potent and effective ingredients that provide visible skin benefits. Look for serums specialized to your desired results, whether you’re hoping for firming and tightening or just some serious moisture.
