How to Use an Ice Roller (And When to Skip It)

Written by licensed aesthetician Kerry Benjamin.

The short version: Keep your ice roller in the freezer and let it sit for 15 seconds before using it. Roll on clean skin with light pressure, upward and outward, then roll down your neck. Use it in the morning for puffiness, or at night after your peel to calm heat and redness. Skip it if you have rosacea.

The ice roller I designed: Our Stainless Steel Ice Roller for Face is all stainless steel, with an egg-shaped head and a ball bearing so it rolls smoothly. Back in stock January 2027.

Why Ice Rolling Isn't Just a Trend

Forget jade rollers and viral hacks. Ice rolling delivers real results, fast. Whether you're dealing with morning puffiness, post-peel redness, or hormonal skin flare-ups, cold can calm, tighten, and brighten in under five minutes.

But it's not just about rolling a frozen tool across your face. Like any skincare step, an ice roller works best when used with intention, and in the right order in your routine.

Benefits of Using an Ice Roller

  • Decreases puffiness: Cold constricts blood vessels to reduce swelling and under-eye bags.
  • Soothes inflammation: Calms red, reactive skin after treatments or flare-ups.
  • Boosts circulation: Encourages lymphatic flow and natural radiance.
  • Helps set makeup: Tightens the look of pores for smoother application.

Does Ice Rolling Help With Lymphatic Drainage?

Your lymph system clears excess fluid, but it can get sluggish, especially overnight or during hormonal shifts. Ice rolling encourages lymph flow, which helps reduce puffiness.

Pro tip: Always roll upward and outward toward your jawline and ears, then gently roll down your neck toward your collarbone. Think: lift, then flush.

How to Use an Ice Roller the Right Way

  1. Chill it properly. Keep your roller in the freezer. Wait 15 seconds before use so it's cold, but not painfully cold.
  2. Cleanse first. Always start with clean skin. I use the Prebiotic Gel Cleanser.
  3. Apply your peel. If you're exfoliating that night, apply the TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel on clean, dry skin and let it absorb.
  4. Roll. Light pressure, upward and outward strokes. Finish with downward strokes on the neck.
  5. Finish with treatment. Apply EGF Activating Serum, retinol (PM only), and moisturizer.

How to Use an Ice Roller in Your Routine

AM routine (for puffiness):

  1. Cleanse with Prebiotic Gel Cleanser
  2. Ice roller
  3. EGF Activating Serum
  4. Microbiome Moisturizer
  5. SPF

PM routine (for post-peel soothing):

  1. Cleanse with Prebiotic Gel Cleanser
  2. TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel (if exfoliating that night)
  3. Ice roller
  4. EGF Activating Serum
  5. Retinol (optional)
  6. Face Oil or Microbiome Moisturizer

An Ice Roller Is Perfect for You If…

  • You wake up puffy or feel inflamed after treatments
  • You get hot flashes or hormonal skin sensitivity
  • You want a quick way to calm redness without loading up on product
  • You want a cooling step that feels like a mini facial

Pro tip from Kerry: I use the ice roller after the TCA Peel to cool and calm my skin. It reduces heat, cuts down the redness, and feels incredible when I'm overheated or breaking out.

When to Skip the Ice Roller

  • Rosacea: Skip it. Cold can make rosacea redness worse.
  • Active breakouts: It can calm inflammation, but it won't treat acne. Use the High Frequency Wand and the TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel for that.
