Acne Scars vs Dark Marks: How to Get Rid of Acne Scars and Dark Spots From Acne
Most "acne scars" aren't scars at all — they're dark marks. The difference matters, because they're treated differently. Here's how to tell them apart and what actually works for each, from a licensed aesthetician.
Dark Marks vs Acne Scars: What's the Difference?
Dark marks are flat brown, red or purple spots left behind after a breakout heals. They're hyperpigmentation — extra pigment your skin made while it was inflamed. This is also called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH.
Acne scars are a change in your skin's texture — indented, pitted or uneven areas. They form when deep, long-lasting inflammation damages collagen.
A quick test: run your finger over the spot. If it's flat, it's a dark mark. If you can feel a dip or uneven texture, it's a scar.
Dark marks are a pigment problem. Scars are a texture problem.
How to Get Rid of Dark Marks From Acne
Pigment sits in skin cells, and those cells only leave when your skin sheds them. Speed up shedding, and dark marks fade.
- Cleanse with a gentle cleanser like our Prebiotic Gel Cleanser.
- Exfoliate with our TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel, 3–5 times a week in the evening. Apply 1/2 a dropper to your face and neck. Don't rinse.
- Treat with EGF Activating Serum, morning and night. EGF helps acne heal faster and fades dark spots.
- Moisturize with our Microbiome Moisturizer.
- Wear SPF every morning. Sun is the fastest way to make marks darker again.
Want them to fade faster? Add our Dermaplaning Tool. It lifts dull surface buildup so the peel and EGF absorb better — and marks lift quicker. Dermaplane first, then apply your peel. Don't dermaplane over active pustular breakouts.
How Long Does It Take for Dark Marks to Fade?
It depends on the type of mark:
- Post-breakout marks (PIH): about 4 weeks
- Sun-related dark spots: about 4–8 weeks
Adding dermaplaning helps lift them quicker. Consistency — and daily SPF — is what keeps them from coming back.
How to Improve Acne Scars and Uneven Texture
A peel alone won't do much for deep scarring. Scars are a texture problem, and texture needs collagen support.
That's where our 0.2mm Microneedling Roller comes in. It's designed for daily at-home use to help smooth uneven texture over time, paired with the right serum.
- Cleanse.
- Apply EGF Activating Serum. You need the right serum — growth factors, peptides or stem cells — not just anything.
- Roll vertically, horizontally and diagonally, 3–4 passes per area, with light pressure. A full face takes no more than 5 minutes.
- Moisturize.
Use it 5–7 times a week. Most people see results in about 90 days. Consistency is key.
Skip rolling over active pustular breakouts, very sensitive skin or irritated skin. Read our full Microneedling at Home guide.
What About Deep Acne Scars?
Deep, pitted scars usually need in-office treatment. Professional microneedling (0.5mm and longer needles), in-office peels and other clinical treatments can create the deeper correction those scars need.
At-home care still matters. It keeps skin clear, fades the marks around scars, and helps maintain the results you get in-office.
How to Prevent New Marks and Scars
- Don't pick or squeeze breakouts. It deepens inflammation and makes marks and scars more likely.
- Treat breakouts early. The faster a breakout heals, the less mark it leaves. See our Complete Acne Guide.
- Skip harsh scrubs. They irritate inflamed skin.
- Wear SPF daily.
Dark Marks on Deeper Skin Tones
Deeper skin tones make pigment more easily, so marks can form faster and last longer. The answer isn't avoiding exfoliation — it's exfoliating without irritation. Our TCA peels are safe for all skin tones, lightest to darkest.
Safety Notes
- Don't use the TCA Face Peel if you're pregnant — it contains salicylic acid.
- Patch test before first use.
- Skip exfoliation on open wounds or actively irritated skin.
- Our dermaplaning blades contain 5% nickel. If you have a known nickel allergy, don't use the dermaplaning tool.
