TCA Peel: What It Is, What It Does, and How to Use a TCA Peel at Home

TCA has a reputation as the "serious" peel. In-office, it can be. At home, it works differently — and that's a good thing. Here's what TCA does and how to use it safely, from a licensed aesthetician.

What Is a TCA Peel?

TCA stands for trichloroacetic acid. It's an exfoliating acid that loosens the bonds holding dead skin cells together, so built-up, pigmented and rough cells can shed.

A TCA peel uses this acid to resurface the skin — smoothing texture and evening out tone.

What Does a TCA Peel Do?

With consistent use, TCA helps:

  • Fade dark spots and post-acne marks
  • Smooth rough, uneven texture
  • Clear congestion and clogged pores
  • Brighten dull skin
  • Help your serums absorb better

In-Office TCA Peels vs At-Home TCA Peels

In-office TCA peels use much higher strengths. They're designed for deep correction — and they come with visible peeling and downtime. They're done occasionally, not weekly.

At-home TCA peels use a low percentage of TCA, so they're gentle enough to use regularly. You get steady results without peeling, flaking or hiding out.

At home, stronger isn't better. If an at-home peel makes you visibly peel, it can damage your skin.

Consistency changes skin. Not chasing flakes.

Why We Pair TCA With Other Acids

Our TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel uses a low-percentage TCA (2%) alongside four other acids, so each one does its own job:

  • TCA — resurfaces uneven texture
  • Glycolic acid — dissolves dead skin buildup and helps lift discoloration
  • Lactic acid — exfoliates while supporting hydration
  • Salicylic acid — clears pore congestion
  • Phytic acid — brightens and supports tone

pH matters as much as percentage. A well-balanced formula exfoliates effectively without irritating your skin — even reactive skin.

How to Use a TCA Peel at Home

Use it in the evening on clean, dry skin.

  1. Patch test before your first use.
  2. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser like our Prebiotic Gel Cleanser.
  3. Dermaplane or use High Frequency first (optional). Always before the peel — never after.
  4. Apply 1/2 a dropper of the peel to your face and neck.
  5. Don't rinse.
  6. Follow with EGF Activating Serum to support repair.
  7. Finish with moisturizer.

Wear SPF every morning.

How Often Can You Use a TCA Peel?

Our TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel is made to use 3–5 times a week.

Don't go over that. Overuse can compromise your skin barrier.

Use the same frequency year-round — just keep daily SPF non-negotiable.

What to Expect After a TCA Peel

  • Mild tingling during application is normal and fades within minutes.
  • Slight pinkness right after is normal.
  • You may notice a faint glow the next morning.
  • No visible peeling or flaking is needed for it to be working.

A slight tingle is normal. Burning is not. If you feel severe burning, wash it off and stop using it.

TCA Peel Results: How Long Does It Take?

After one use: brighter-looking skin and smoother texture.

Within 2–4 weeks: improved clarity, less congestion and more even tone.

With consistent use 3–5 times a week: noticeably refined texture, fewer breakouts, and more radiant, even-looking skin.

Can You Use a TCA Peel With Retinol or Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning: yes. Dermaplane first, then apply the peel. Removing surface buildup helps the peel work more evenly.

High Frequency: yes, but always before the peel — never after.

Retinol: yes, if your skin tolerates it. Patch test first. Apply EGF between the peel and our Advanced Retinol Serum — it creates a buffer that supports recovery. Read our Peel vs Retinol guide.

Is a TCA Peel Safe?

  • Our TCA peels are safe for all skin tones, lightest to darkest.
  • Don't use them if you're pregnant — they contain salicylic acid.
  • Skip it on open wounds or actively irritated skin, or if your skin barrier needs repair first.
  • Always patch test first.
  • Wear SPF every day.

TCA for Your Body

For bumps, body acne, razor bumps and rough texture, our TCA Multi-Acid Body Peel uses the same approach, made for your body — 2 times a week.

The Real Philosophy

TCA doesn't need to be scary to work.

Low strength. Right pH. Used consistently.

Peeling smarter always wins.
