What Is EGF Serum? A Growth Factor Serum for Adult Breakouts and the Marks They Leave

Most growth factor serums are sold as anti-aging. But growth factors are also one of the most useful things you can put on adult breakouts — they help acne heal faster and fade the dark spots it leaves behind.

If you're past the age you expected to break out, you've probably noticed two things.

Breakouts take longer to heal.
And the marks they leave stick around for months.

That's not bad luck. It's repair slowing down. And repair is exactly what growth factors are for.

What Is EGF?

EGF stands for Epidermal Growth Factor.

It's a protein your skin already makes. It tells your skin cells to multiply and rebuild damaged tissue.

Your skin makes less of it as you get older, so repair slows down. A breakout that cleared in days at 20 can linger for weeks at 40. The mark it leaves can stay for four months.

Less EGF. Slower repair. Longer-lasting marks.

What Is a Growth Factor Serum?

A growth factor serum puts more of these repair signals back on your skin.

Our EGF Activating Serum uses plant-based EGF. It's the same repair protein your skin makes, grown in plants.

It's called an Activating Serum because that's what it does. It activates your skin's own repair process.

Growth Factor Serum Benefits

  • Helps breakouts heal faster
  • Fades post-breakout marks and dark spots
  • Calms redness after dermaplaning, microneedling, peels and high frequency
  • Supports a stronger, more resilient barrier
  • Smooths rough texture and brightens dull skin

Why Growth Factors Work for Adult Breakouts

EGF helps breakouts heal faster. And it helps fade the dark spots they leave behind.

Most breakout products work by drying the pimple out. The problem: your barrier is thinner than it was at 25. Stripping skin that's already fragile means more inflammation.

And inflammation is what leaves the dark mark behind.

EGF works the other way. It speeds up repair, so the breakout heals faster and the mark fades sooner.

Turnover is what clears the pore. Repair is what clears the mark.

What EGF Serum Helps With

  • Adult and hormonal breakouts
  • Post-breakout marks — the red and brown spots left after a blemish heals (also called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH)
  • Dark spots, including melasma and sun damage
  • Slowed cell turnover and dull, uneven skin
  • Recovery after dermaplaning, microneedling, peels and high frequency
  • Congestion and rough texture

EGF, Dark Spots and Aging

Melasma and sun damage: EGF can help. For stubborn spots, pair it with our TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel for faster results. Read our guide to dark spots, hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Lines and wrinkles: that's what our Advanced Retinol Serum is for. Retinol is clinically proven to stimulate collagen and to prevent, slow down and reverse the visible signs of aging.

EGF heals breakouts and fades marks. Retinol works on lines and wrinkles. They do different jobs and work well together.

How to Choose a Growth Factor Serum

  • Look for EGF on the label. It may be listed as sh-Oligopeptide-1.
  • Check where it comes from. Ours is plant-based.
  • Look for ingredients that help it absorb. A growth factor that sits on the surface can't do its job.
  • Skip added fragrance. Breakout-prone and post-treatment skin doesn't need it.

What's in Our EGF Serum

Three key ingredients. Three jobs.

  • Plant-based EGF (sh-Oligopeptide-1) — restarts repair.
  • Saccharomyces Lysate Extract — a yeast extract that speeds healing and calms inflammation.
  • Ethoxydiglycol — drives both deeper into the skin instead of leaving them on the surface.

That's why it works on skin that's already broken out, instead of making it worse.

No fragrance. It doesn't sting or peel.

How to Use EGF Serum

Twice a day, morning and night.

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Apply EGF. It's thin and absorbs fast, so it goes first.
  3. Using a thicker serum? Apply it next.
  4. Finish with moisturizer.
  5. During the day, finish with SPF.

Using a peel? Apply the peel first, then EGF. If you use retinol, EGF goes between the peel and retinol as a buffer.

One bottle lasts about 4–6 weeks at twice a day.

Using EGF With Your Tools

Microneedling: apply EGF, then roll. The tiny channels help it absorb. Read our Microneedling at Home guide.

Dermaplaning, peels and high frequency: EGF is your repair step after. It helps calm the redness that can follow tools and exfoliation.

How Long Until EGF Serum Works?

Weeks 1–3: skin feels calmer, with less redness after tools and exfoliation. Some skin purges during this window.

Weeks 4–8: breakouts heal faster and stay smaller. Texture smooths and skin looks brighter.

Weeks 8–12: post-breakout marks visibly fade.

Month 3 and beyond: calmer, more resilient skin.

Want marks to fade faster? Pair EGF with the TCA Multi-Acid Face Peel. Together, post-breakout marks often fade in about 4 weeks. See Acne Scars vs Dark Marks.

Why Does EGF Serum Smell?

Ours has an earthy, fermented scent. That's the yeast extract, at the level it needs to be at to work.

We don't add fragrance to cover it up.

The Real Philosophy

Everyone treats the breakout.

Nobody helps you heal it.

That's the step most routines are missing.

Treat the breakout. Then repair what it leaves behind.
