What is Niacinamide and Why You Need It In Your Skincare Routine

Don’t be intimidated—niacinamide might sound like a mouthful, but is just another name for vitamin B3, a common skincare ingredient that reduces hyperpigmentation, softens fine lines, battles acne, and hydrates the skin. Learn more about this multi-tasking nutrient and how you can use it to get smoother, brighter skin.

WHAT IS NIACINAMIDE?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. In the body, vitamin B3 supports metabolism and helps promote the flushing of toxins. When applied topically to the skin, niacinamide helps manage breakouts, control oil, and promote even skin texture. Since niacinamide is water-soluble, it is a great ingredient for oily skin types that don’t want to add extra oil to the skin. Check out our Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid serum.

BENEFITS OF NIACINAMIDEIMPROVES BARRIER FUNCTION

Niacinamide boosts barrier function in the skin by increasing ceramide production. Ceramides are fats that help skin remain plump and firm, while preventing dehydration through transepidermal water loss. A strong epidermal barrier keeps skin hydrated, controls oil production, and decreases the appearance of fine lines.

REDUCES HYPERPIGMENTATION

Melanin is responsible for producing pigment in the skin—niacinamide reduces the transfer of these pigment molecules to the skin’s epidermis, brightening skin over time and reducing future hyperpigmentation.

BATTLES ACNE

Apart from balancing oil production, niacinamide is a powerful anti-inflammatory, which can help calm redness and irritation caused by breakouts.

FIGHTS POLLUTION AND FREE RADICAL DAMAGE

Exposing the skin to environmental stressors can cause the skin to age prematurely. Niacinamide is an antioxidant, which means it protects the skin from oxidative stress caused by pollutants, pollen, and free radicals.
